The Hoff Takes Confidentiality to the Bank
Those of you curious to know just how much booty David Hasselhoff bagged from Baywatch might be out of luck.
In a bid to keep documents pertaining to the actor's financial status under wraps, attorneys representing the Hoff and ex-wife Pamela Bach told a judge Tuesday that the two camps are close to reaching a mutually satisfying monetary arrangement in their divorce proceedings.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mark Juhas reminded them, however, that although in August he limited access to Hasselhoff's financial records to Bach, her lawyers, accountants and financial experts, the public is usually entitled to broad access to divorce records. For instance, earlier this year the state Supreme Court denied billionaire Ron Burkle's request to keep the terms of his divorce secret.
Juhas is currently mulling over who else besides Bach should get access in the future, and whether it will be kosher for her to discuss the deal with the press.
"Right now it's just you guys fighting," he told the lawyers. "No one else has filed for anything from this court right now."
Hasselhoff's attorney, Melvin Goldsman, argued that the couple's prenuptial agreement has a clause mandating that the duo's financial info remain confidential.
That's all well and good, Bach's attorney, Susan Wiesner, said, but she argued that the prenup is not enforceable because her client wasn't asked to sign it until the last minute. As in, the moment when the then-25-year-old was clad in white and about to walk down the aisle back in 1989.
Wiesner pointed out that she needs the lowdown on Hasselhoff's assets so that Bach's requests for further child support, as well as all other split-related financial issues, can be sorted out once and for all.
Peter Anderson, an attorney representing America's Got Talent producer Fremantle Media North America, also appeared in court Tuesday to champion Hasselhoff's position.
Bach attended the hearing, as well, speaking up once on behalf of her own finances, saying that she was hoping that future court dates could take place ASAP, due to the hefty legal fees she's incurring. Another hearing is scheduled for Nov. 20.
While Hasselhoff was not in court today, he was at the L.A. Convention Center kicking off auditions for the second season of America's Got Talent, which returns to NBC in January.
