No "Pride" in "Vegas"

Rob Lowe and entertainers Siegfried and Roy finally have something in common besides their Vegas-based TV shows: Hiatus for their Vegas-based TV shows.

Lowe's dr. vegas and the Siegfried and Roy-inspired Father of the Pride both will watch the November sweeps unfold without them.

CBS has opted to run with repeats of its hit crime shows (CSI and Without a Trace) in dr. vegas' 10-11 p.m. Friday time slot effectively immediately.

Starting next week, NBC will replace the CGI-animated Pride at 9 p.m. on Tuesdays with supersize episodes of The Biggest Loser, the already-hefty weight-loss reality series.

The November sweeps, one of the season's all-important excuses to stunt-cast Denise Richards on Two and a Half Men, runs Thursday through Dec. 1.

The capital-letter-eschewing dr. vegas ranked 58th (7.3 million viewers) in the TV week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research. Pride placed 68th (6.6 million).

Through five episodes, dr. vegas was averaging 8.2 million viewers; Pride was bringing in 9.1 million through seven episodes.

dr. vegas, starring Lowe as the titular casino-based practitioner, is shaping up as the Brat Pack alum's second failed series following his 2003 exit from NBC's The West Wing. The Lyon's Den lasted only six episodes on NBC last season.

Father of the Pride, meanwhile, is shaping up to be the poster series for NBC's failed fall.

The expensive comedy--each episode cost about $2 million to produce--was the brainchild of DreamWorks executive Jeffrey Katzenberg who caught a Siegfried and Roy show in Las Vegas, and decided the illusionists and their big cats (no euphemism intended) were sitcom material.

As produced, the white lions ended up as the stars of the show, with John Goodman and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Cheryl Hines on lead vocals. The animated versions of Siegfried and Roy appeared only sporadically (with other actors supplying their voices).

As bad press would have it, one of the couple's real-life tigers nearly killed Roy Horn in October 2003. But work on the series continued, and it debuted Aug. 31 before 12.4 million. Pride never again feasted on so many viewers.

The series is the third Peacock net show to be benched by NBC this fall, after Hawaii and Last Comic Standing 3.

NBC, which fell to fourth last week in total viewers (averaging 9.3 million) and the 18-to-49-year-old demographic, says Pride will return to the schedule after sweeps month.

There were no such promises forthcoming from CBS regarding dr. vegas--not with its time slot filled at least through mid-December.

Maybe Lowe should hit the Strip with Siegfried and Roy to commiserate. And figure out how that Dan Tanna guy stayed on the air so long.

Elsewhere:

ABC's Desperate Housewives hit a season-high 22.1 million viewers (fourth place).
Opposite baseball, CBS' CSI: NY hit a season-low 13 million viewers (22nd place).
Some 15.7 million watched Donald Trump give the quick hook to Elizabeth Jarosz on The Apprentice 2 (14th place), NBC's lone Top 10 show among younger viewers.
Father of the Pride's John Goodman made a so-so live-action fall debut with the new CBS sitcom, Center of the Universe--35th place, 10.4 million.
CBS' King of Queens began its seventh season stuck in the outer boroughs--34th place, 10.7 million.
Joey watch: NBC ordered two extra episodes; the show (a repeat) tumbled about 10 places, to 38th (10.1 million).
Rodney watch: The non-hyped ABC sitcom put up Joey-esque numbers--39th place, 10 million viewers.
Nearly 7.5 million pulled for Ashlee Simpson to brave an acid-reflux flare-up on the NBC broadcast of the Radio Music Awards (57th place).
Fox's The Swan 2 needs an extreme makeover after its 70th-place premiere. Its 6.4 million viewers were down more than 30 percent from last season's average.
NBC's LAX moved to a new day (Wednesday) and time (8 p.m.), only to find the same lousy ratings (72nd place, 6.3 million).
The WB's The Mountain moved to a new day (Sunday), only to find new lousy ratings (116th place, 1.6 million).
The WB's Jack & Bobby (108th place, 3 million) moved to a new day (Wednesday), only to get clocked by UPN's Kevin Hill (89th place, 4 million).
Strangely, a guest appearance by teen-fave Norman Mailer had no effect whatsoever on the numbers for WB's Gilmore Girls (80th place, 5.6 million).
UPN's America's Next Top Model 3 stayed strong (83rd place, 5.1 million) with a compelling storyline about a defaced batch of brownies.
ABC's Wife Swap traded up to 42nd place (9.4 million), and won a season-long commitment from the network.
The WB's Grounded for Life, which did not air last week, has been sent to its room for good. The sitcom, punished by Fox in 2002, will be dispatched by the WB after its 13th, and final, episode runs later this season.

Overall, CSI (first place, 29.6 million) led CBS to big wins in total viewers (13.5 million) and demographically desirable ones.

Fox, powered by a much-watched World Series, claimed second in both races, averaging 11.3 million viewers. ABC (9.3 million) moved up to third in the two categories.

The WB, paced by 7th Heaven (66th place, 6.7 million), bested UPN, 3.9 million to 3.7 million.

Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:
