Rascal Flattens Duff on Charts
The harmonious country trio pulled a surprise upset on the charts this past week as their new album, Feels Like Today, bested actress-singer Hilary Duff and her hit single "So Yesterday."
Feels Like Today sold 201,000 copies for the week ending Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Duff's self-titled release settled for the number-two spot, selling 192,000 discs.
Rascal Flatts rocketed to country success over the last four years, earning countless CMA accolades and awards, including Song of the Year and Vocal Group of the Year. The trio's previous disc, Melt, went platinum in five weeks.
Duff, meanwhile, made her mark in the Lizzie McGuire TV series and has since expanded to the big screen and the pop charts. Her 2003 disc Metamorphosis, also topped out at the number-two chart spot.
Powered by her radio hit "Goodies," 18-year-old singer Ciara landed the next best bow at three with her rookie release, Goodies. Her debut disc, featuring artists like Ludacris and Lil Jon, sold 125,000 copies. Utah rockers the Used, fresh off Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution tour, followed at six with In Love & Death selling 93,000 new discs.
And how can we forget about Marilyn Manson? It's hard to, since Lest We Forget--The Best of Marilyn Manson wrapped up the Top 10 debuts at nine, selling nearly 80,000 units. The greatest hits disc, which Manson calls his farewell compilation, features a cover of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus," among other radio favorites.
The rest of the Top 10, all recent regulars, included Green Day's American Idiot at four, Nelly's Suit at five, Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company at seven, Nelly's Sweat at eight and Tim McGraw's Live Like You Were Dying in the 10 spot.
Just missing the Top 10, Joss Stone's second disc, Mind, Body, & Soul, entered the charts at number 11. The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson followed at 13 with Smile, an album he famously abandoned in the '60s that's now released for the first time. And New York's Joy Division-inspired Interpol relied on their usual Antics to open at 15.
A trio of rap artists also made solid debuts: Talib Kweli's Beautiful Struggle at 14, Queen Latifah's The Dana Owens Album at 16, and newcomer Guerilla Black at 20 with Guerilla City.
Other noteworthy debuts included Shawnna's Worth tha Weight at 22, Social Distortion's Sex, Love & Rock N Roll at 31, Juanes' Mi Sangre at 33, television's Regis Philbin at 54 with When You're Smiling and the Wu-Tang Clan's Disciples of the 36 Chambers at 82.
